How to add/install liner to your raised bed

Installing a liner provides a damp-proof barrier between WoodBlocX timber and soil. We sell a plastic liner (4x5m) but you can buy raised bed liners from most DIY stores or garden centres.

We strongly recommend that you add a liner to maximise the lifespan of your WoodBlocX structure. Read our protective liner instructions

It's important to LINE THE INSIDE of your raised bed including adding protection to ANY SUPPORTING BUTTRESSES your design may have.

Step by step guide

On the last layer of WoodBlocX before you add the capping, get your liner in position and make small holes around the edge where the dowels will be inserted.
Knock your final layer of dowels (packed in green bags) through the plastic into the BlocX making sure your liner is trapped between the dowel and BlocX.
Trim any excess liner that overhangs with a sharp blade (but leave enough material for strength!)
Knock on your finishing capping layer which traps your liner between the BlocX and capping. Job done!

If you forget to add liner before adding your capping layer, don't panic! You can staple, nail or screw your liner to the inside of your raised bed.

You must protect all supporting buttresses with a liner.

Building WoodBlocX on soft ground such as soil or grass

...we recommend lining the sides of your raised bed with our DPM material (damp proof membrane) to protect the wood. You can also line the bottom if you wish, but remember to use a breathable / permeable liner to allow water to drain through.

Building WoodBlocX on hard ground such as paving or concrete

...we recommend fully lining the sides and bottom of your raised bed with our DPM material (damp proof membrane) to protect the wood. Lining the sides and bottom will create an area suitable for holding soil. If you wish, to help with excess drainage on hard surfaces, you can make a few small holes at the bottom in your liner.

Before filling your raised bed with soil

At the bottom of your raised bed, for both lining methods, we recommend adding a drainage layer of hardcore, sand, gravel or even organic materials such as logs and twigs. This will also reduce the amount of topsoil you will need when filling the remaining space in your WoodBlocX structure.
