# What are buttress supports?

${youtube}[Watch to learn more.](flZ2ik3dkG4)

When building a WoodBlocX retaining wall, **buttress supports act as cantilevers** behind the structure to help pin the wall to the ground. These clever supports help to keep the earth behind strong and stable and should always be connected to the ground using [ground spikes](/en/article/what-are-ground-spikes-nd30ni/) or [angle floor brackets](/en/article/when-should-i-use-angle-floor-brackets-1um859o/).

Buttress supports are automatically included in all of our WoodBlocX designs that require them and instructions about how to build them are demonstrated in your layer-by-layer building guide, which is tailored specifically to your design.
